Abstract

We reviewed 6794 patients who took elective surgery under general or regional anesthesia during two years from August 1988 to July 1990. Among them 509 patients had various allergic problems confirmed by preanesthetic past medical history taking.
These
patients were evaluated according to clinical departments, ages, and allergic causes.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) The proportion of the patient who had allergic history was 7.5% of those who took elective surgery.
2) The departmental distribution was general surgery(38.2% of patients), orthopedic surgery 9q3.4%), otolaryngology(12.2%), obstertrics and gynecology(12%), and so on.
3) The age distribution was 40-49 years of age (20.2% of patients), 30-39 years(17.7%), 20-29 years(17.5%), 50-59(14.7%), and so on.
4) the main causes of allergy included drugs(38.5% of patients) such as antibiotics, drugs for common cold and analgesics, preexisting allergic diseases(25.5%) such as bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis, and foods(21.8%) such as fish and
shell,
meat and fruit. The other minor causes of allergy included temperature change, contact dermatitis, contrast media for radiology, and so on.
Conclusively by trying to detect the past allergic history of the surgical patients by meticulous preanesthetic interview, and to get rid of the possible causes of allergic attak includig various kinds kinds of drugs used I the department of
anesthesiology, the anesthesiologists can prevent the sudden allergic reactio perioperatively, and they can serve the safe anesthetic practice to these to these allergic patients
